Texas motorists under an enforcement microscope this weekend

The countdown to Memorial Day weekend is now down to seconds (indeed, is has already expired for many Texas residents), with the annual excuse-to-party late-May holiday being just about ready to kick off in full fashion.

That means lots of things, of course. Homage paid to military veterans who sacrificed greatly for the country. Backyard barbecues. Sports activities. Family outings in outdoor venues across the state. Heavy traffic loads.

And a heightened law enforcement presence on streets and roadways across the state.

Readers, you know what state troopers and police officers are looking for, given the annual enforcement campaign rollout and attendant reminder: alleged driving infractions of every sort that confer the probable cause necessary for law enforcers to stop vehicles and come into close interaction with drivers.

Put another way: They're looking for drivers they might reasonably charge with a DWI offense. And they're pretty good at that, as evidenced by the 372 drunk arrests made across Texas during last year's Memorial Day holiday.

Of course, traffic stops can yield a number of other adverse consequences for motorists, as well. An online publication spotlighting the enhanced enforcement efforts now underway and running through early next week notes that they include fugitive and felony arrests, belt-related offenses, speeding violations and many other alleged wrongs.

That is not to say that there is now a collective bulls-eye on the backs of Texas drivers. The annually ramped-up scrutiny that marks the holiday should unquestionably serve, though, as a reminder for state motorists to be locked in on safe driving behaviors.

We wish every individual and family across Texas a safe and happy holiday.
