30 people faced felony DWI arrests last month

Many DWI charges in Texas are not felonies, but misdemeanors. That's true even for those being arrested for the second time. While driving under the influence is illegal, just as it is all across the United States, most people who get caught see relatively light charges and sentences.

That said, it's important not to assume that all DWI arrests are misdemeanors. In February of 2018, a total of 30 people were picked up on felony charges. These can lead to harsher sentences and felonies stay on your record for life in many cases.

So, why did these people face felony charges instead of misdemeanor charges? Many cases just centered around a third arrest. While the first two are generally misdemeanors, a third incident after two prior convictions will then net felony charges.

In other cases, people had children in the car with them at the time of the arrest. That increases the charges to a felony. Remember that minors are people under the age of 18, not just young kids.

One driver captured an alleged DWI incident on camera when he taped the truck ahead of him driving off of the road. He then ran up and told the driver to get out. It turned out that the other man had two prior DWIs and is now facing charges for the third one.

The penalties for a third DWI can include anywhere from two to 10 years behind bars, a license suspension and as much as $10,000 in fines. That is why it is so important for anyone who is facing felony charges to know all of his or her legal defense options.
